A Versatile Hiking Pack – Exped Mountain Pro 20

I’ve tried and tested my fair share of backpacks, and I can confidently say that the Exped Mountain Pro is one of the most comfortable packs in its size. It is extremely versatile for an 20 liter pack due to its simple design and small footprint. I originally purchased this pack as a college backpack to carry everything while biking around campus, which it excelled at.

The Mountain Pro is a top-loading backpack, which works best with modular packing. We find it’s best suited for outdoor adventure rather than everyday carry due to its limited pockets and compartments. The 20L size is ideal, providing a balance that allows you to bring just enough without the risk of overpacking. The design includes daisy chains, providing the flexibility to add extra gear as needed. The inclusion of gear ties and a removable clear pouch inside the backpack adds an extra layer of convenience as well.

The main compartment is designed with a thick neoprene sleeve, which can accommodate a large MacBook Pro. The brain features a small zipper pocket with a key loop, ensuring that your essentials are always within arm’s reach. The full-length front pocket provides additional organization, equipped with a drainage port for wet items, making it ideal for outdoor activities.

While the backpack is designed for hiking and climbing, the removable hip belt and secondary thin hip belt make it versatile for various situations. I found the larger hip belt very comfortable and light enough it stayed out of the way when not in use. All straps feature velcro keepers for excess, providing a clean and organized look. However one downside with this system is that the velcro can occasionally snag your clothing if not secured down 100% properly. The inclusion of extra tie-down straps is a thoughtful touch, perfect for securing skis or additional gear.

The zipper pulls, which glow in the dark, are a small yet practical detail that adds to the overall functionality. The semi-rigid back panel and removable foam panel inside the pack contribute to its comfort and help maintain its form even under heavy loads. The added hook for a water bladder is a convenient feature for use with a water bladder.

One thing to note is that with extended wear, I encountered a minor issue where an internal  seam surrounding the top zipper started to unseal. Fortunately, the company’s customer service was exceptional when we brought the issue to their attention. When we reached out about the damage, they were quick to respond and willing to replace the backpack, demonstrating a commitment to customer satisfaction.

In conclusion, the Mountain Pro is a standout product that we feel lives up to its promises, especially at a reasonable price point of $249. Its thoughtful design, comfort, and durability make it an excellent companion for any adventure. Despite a minor issue, the company’s responsive customer service ensures that you can trust in the longevity of your investment. Highly recommended for outdoor enthusiasts and everyday adventurers alike.
