Kaya’s POV – Ruffwear Grip Trex Dog Boots

When it comes to protecting your dog’s paws during outdoor activities, Ruffwear’s Grip Trex Dog Boots offer an excellent blend of durability, traction, and comfort. These boots are a fantastic choice for pet owners who want to ensure their dogs can safely navigate various terrains and conditions. We recently purchased some for our dog, Kaya, who is a large Doberman mix, and we have had a great experience so far. Here are the reasons why:

1. Exceptional Traction

One of the standout features of the Grip Trex Dog Boots is their traction. Whether your dog is hiking on rocky trails, walking on slippery surfaces, or exploring sandy beaches, these boots provide reliable grip and stability, as well as protection from sharp edges or rough terrain. This traction is especially useful for dogs that accompany their owners on outdoor adventures or participate in activities that require sure-footedness, such as hiking or running.

2. Versatile Applications

Not only are these boots great for outdoor sports, they are also ideal for boating adventures, keeping your dog from slipping on wet surfaces and preventing scratches on boat upholstery and other surfaces. We’ve also found these boots super handy in situations where Kaya has had skin irritations or issues with the pads on her feet, where we want to limit her ability to lick and chew. She recently developed a sore on one of her feet from an irritated nail bed. By using the Grip Trex Boots, we were able to prevent her from bothering the sore, eliminating the need for a cone while she recovers. The boots will also protect from any additional debris or irritants getting into the already impacted area.

3. True to Size with Adjustable Velcro

Ruffwear has made sizing straightforward with their easy to read measurement suggestion and sizing chart. Our boots came true to size. The boots offer excellent fit and comfort, which is enhanced by the adjustable velcro straps at the top of the boot. This feature helps keep the boots in place more securely, especially for active dogs like Kaya, who tend to move around a lot. Ruffwear does recommend that you check and adjust after 15 minutes of activity to ensure fit is secure throughout your adventure.

4. Reflectors

Since we opted for the sleek black color for Kaya (who is also a dark dog), we were happy to realize that the boots do have reflectors, which would come in handy for any nighttime activities. There is one reflector on the velcro strap, and two on the toes, making it easy to spot your puppy if running on the road at night.

Considerations

Kaya has definitely benefitted from having these boots in her gear arsenal so far. A couple of things to keep in mind if you purchase a pair for your dog:

Size May Vary Front to Back

It’s important to note that your dog may have different sizes for their front and back paws, so measuring each paw is crucial for the best fit. For instance, Kaya who is large but tall and lean, wears size 2.25 in the back and 2.5 in the front. This specific sizing ensures she has the right fit and comfort level, even if she moves a lot or bends her paws.

Adaptability and Comfort

It’s important to give your dog time to adjust to wearing the boots. At first, Kaya was unsure about walking in them, as she was not used to having anything on her feet. Therefore, it’s advisable to allow your dog to wear them around the house or during short walks to get accustomed to the feel. This acclimatization period is crucial before embarking on more strenuous activities like hiking or long treks to ensure they are able to properly judge their movements.

While we chose the Grip Trex Boots, Ruffwear offers a variety of boot options tailored to different activities and conditions:

  • Trail Shoes: These lighter, more flexible shoes provide traction for walks and everyday activities. They offer comfort and protection but are not as rugged as the Grip Trex or Winter Trex boots.
  • Grip Trex Boots: These middle-tier boots are slightly more rugged than the trail shoes, offering durability and breathability. They are perfect for more active and demanding outdoor activities.
  • Winter Trex Boots: Designed for winter adventures, these boots are the most durable option, with insulation for cold weather and a softshell insert that protects higher up the leg. They are ideal for snow and ice activities, providing the necessary warmth and protection.

Conclusion

Ruffwear Grip Trex Dog Boots are a fantastic investment for pet owners who enjoy outdoor activities with their dogs. They offer reliable traction, comfort, and protection, ensuring that your dog can safely explore the great outdoors. Just remember to give your pup time to get used to them, and you’ll be ready for any adventure together.
