The Balian Sling Bag is a product of Bedouin, a London-based company renowned for its high-quality, handcrafted bags. Bedouin takes pride in using premium materials and meticulous craftsmanship, and the Balian Sling Bag is no exception. Made from Dyneema composite fabric, leather, nylon webbing, Austri Alpin hardware, YKK zippers, and custom print cotton, this sling is mostly a well-constructed design, with a few quirks.
Design and Material Quality
The Balian Sling Bag is a testament to Bedouin’s commitment to using top-tier materials. The combination of Dyneema fabric and leather gives the bag a sleek yet rugged appearance, while the nylon webbing and Austri Alpin hardware add to its durability. The YKK zippers are another high-quality addition, known for their reliability and smooth operation.
One of the bag’s standout features is its size. It fits perfectly when worn as a crossbody, allowing you to carry all your essentials with a bit of extra space. The layout is minimalistic but effective, featuring a main compartment with a rain flap and AquaGuard zippers to keep your belongings safe from the elements. Inside, there’s a slim Dyneema admin panel that’s perfect for organizing smaller items like pens, phones, notebooks, and power banks. There’s also enough room to store additional items like a small first aid kit, making it a versatile option for daily use.
Functionality
While the Balian Sling Bag excels in design and material quality, its functionality has some drawbacks. The main zipper, for instance, can be difficult to open with one hand due to the rain flap getting in the way on occassion. This small inconvenience can become frustrating over time, especially when you’re on the go and need quick access to your belongings.
The back compartment, also equipped with an AquaGuard zipper, is a great spot for storing more sensitive items like a passport or a thin wallet. However, it’s worth noting that this compartment doesn’t have much depth, so it’s best suited for flatter items.
Strap and Hardware Issues
One of the most significant issues with the Balian Sling Bag is its heavy-duty Austri Alpin hardware. While the hardware looks impressive and adds to the bag’s aesthetic appeal, it’s too heavy for the nylon straps. When the bag is fully loaded, the straps tend to slide through the metal Cobra buckle too easily. This has occasionally been an issue when putting on or removing the sling, as the nylon straps can lose their grip and require adjustment. I have never had an issue with the straps loosening when the sling is on. Additionally the weight of the metal cobra buckle helps balance the sling with heavier loads.
The smaller compression straps are also prone to slippage, which can be frustrating when you’re trying to keep the bag compact. The poor strap management is another letdown, as the elastic bands meant to hold the straps in place often slide down, leaving excess strap hanging loose.
To address these issues, I replaced the metal Cobra buckle with a GT Cobra buckle and a pair of tri-glides, which improved the sling’s functionality significantly. This modification cost about $18, and I believe it’s a worthwhile investment for anyone experiencing similar problems.
Final Thoughts
The Balian Sling Bag by Bedouin is a generally well-crafted piece that shines in terms of materials and design. However, its functionality leaves something to be desired, particularly with the strap and hardware setup. While I appreciate the bag’s capacity and sleek appearance, the frustration of dealing with slipping straps and difficult zippers can be a deal-breaker for some users.
Ultimately, I find the Balian Sling Bag to be a good choice when I need to carry a bit more than usual, but it’s not without flaws. With some modifications, it can become a more user-friendly option, but out of the box, it may require a bit of patience and adjustment to make it work as intended.
